We get many questions every year, so here are some of the more popular questions:
What are Canteen Cards? All campers get a punch card valid for one drink and one snack per visit to our snack bar included with their registration. We have candy, soda pop, ice cream, crackers, jerky, pickles, etc.
Do you sell shirts and other merch? Yes! Any shirts pre-ordered will be given out during registration check-in. You will be able to purchase other Camp merch like water bottles, stuffed animals, hoodies, frisbees, etc. The camp store will be open at various times throughout the week and we will notify campers when they can purchase merch.
Can my camper bunk near and be grouped with a friend/cousin/sibling? Not a problem! Our dorms are large open barracks style and there is ample opportunity to ensure friends can bunk next to each other. For the family groups, our Deans can usually allow a buddy in the groups.
What if my child has a dietary allergy - how do you handle that? For the most part, our kitchen is not set up to handle campers with severe dietary allergies. However, most of our meals can be dairy/gluten free. We can provide reasonable space to accommodate for severe allergies. Please contact the office prior to camp and let us know so we can be prepared.
Do you have a Camp Nurse and what is your First Aid process? Every camp has a licensed Nurse that volunteers their time to serve HHCC. They range from school nurses, EMT’s, RN’s, etc. and they help dispense regular medications for campers. They also treat minor aches, bumps, and scrapes with over-the-counter treatments as needed. In the event of an emergency and if its safe to do so, someone from the Camp will transport the injured or sick camper to Neosho Regional Medical Center in Chanute, KS. If necessary we will call for an ambulance and they will be taken to NRMC. HHCC is a designated landing zone for a Med Flight and that could be utilized if necessary. In addition, most of our summer staff is Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid certified.
What do we do if my camper has regular medications they need to take? Please put all medications (OTC or RX) in baggie with the campers name on it and the original bottle with written instructions for our Nurse. The Nurse is part of the registration and check-in process and you can give the medications to the Nurse when you check-in.
Why do we check for lice? Lice know no boundaries when it comes to social or economic status. Therefore, everyone staying overnight in the dorms at HHCC will be screened for lice before they’re allowed to check-in for camp. If lice or knits are found, treatment can be performed off-site and the camper can immediately return to be screened after complete treatment (including all knits picked out). Our nurse will screen one more time to ensure clear hair. If the camper is not cleared after one treatment, a transfer will be offered to a later camp to ensure a full camp experience.
What if my church has scholarships for campers? If your church pays partial or full scholarships, that must be arranged with the Camp Office ahead of time with your minister/church. We provide churches with coupon codes to use during registration. HHCC does not notify your church that you registered, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to let your church know.
What if my camper needs a ride to/from camp? HHCC does not coordinate transportation to and from camp.
What if my camper is getting baptized at camp? All baptisms are saved for the last day of camp at 10am. No camper is baptized without parent/guardian permission.
Can my camper attend with their older/younger friend/cousin/sibling? Campers are expected to attend their age appropriate camp, please do not ask for exceptions. Having older or younger campers than the camp is designed for can cause distractions and risks.
What grade camp should my child attend? We base our Camp grades based on GRADE MOST RECENTLY COMPLETED. Our Camp leadership has prayed over something as simple as this because we are very intentional about our Camp Programming and at this time we feel this is the best way for our Camps to be sorted.
Can parents attend with a child? For the younger campers and especially if it’s their first time, we love having parents tag along. We do not charge parents to attend, but we do encourage a donation during registration to help with meal costs. As the campers get older, its less likely that parents will just want to tag along.
Who are your Camp Volunteers? Our Volunteers are the lifeline of the camp. They are different each camp and consist of youth, children, worship, and senior ministers from our supporting churches. In addition, we have teachers, counselors, and other youth workers who love ministering to children and teens. All of our volunteers are screened and approved to work with children.
Do you take up offering during camp? Yes, each summer we support one mission or missionary as an entire camp. Campers can give cash or unused Canteen Card punches (valued at $1 each punch).
What if my campers has to leave unexpectedly leave early? If your child must go home due to illness, injury, or family emergency in the first 24 hours, a certificate may be granted for use at a later camp or the following year.
Our plans have changed, do you offer refunds? HHCC does not offer refunds for cancellations within two weeks of the first day of the camp registered. Depending on room at other camps, we may be able to TRANSFER your registration to a different camp.
Can my camper call home if they want to? Campers are not allowed to make personal calls on the Camp line unless it's an emergency or for baptism permission.
Can campers get letters or packages in the mail? Absolutely! Send letters and packages to:
Hidden Haven Christian Camp
Camper Name & Session
8001 Hidden Haven Rd
Thayer, KS 66776
When does mail get delivered? We pass out mail during meal times. Plan accordingly, we still have rural mail delivery, so it may take an extra day or two, depending on where it’s sent from. We do not deliver mail on the last day of camp. FedEx and UPS make almost daily deliveries during the summer, feel free to utilize that Amazon Prime membership and track your package! You can also leave post-dated letters with the office during check-in and we’ll hand them out! *Please note: snacks and candy are not allowed in the dorms but can be eaten outside
Can I pick my camper up for sports/doctor/family stuff and bring them back? Leaving camp for non-camp related activities is strongly discouraged. If your camper has to leave, please coordinate the times with the Camp Office and Dean. Campers must be checked in and out each time by approved parent/guardian.
What is your sick camper policy? We have a trained nurse on campus at every session of camp. As soon as a camper indicates they’re not feeling well, the nurse is notified and qualified care and observation begins. If a fever develops, the camper is isolated, care administered, and parent notified. If the illness or fever does not recover quickly, parents/guardians are notified again and a plan is developed for the camper to be picked up and taken home for further care.
